White House "confirms" Hamas talks
WASHINGTON, March 5 (KUNA) -- The US on Wednesday confirmed holding negotiations with Hamas over releasing a number of Americans held hostage in Gaza Strip.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told a press conference that special envoy, who's engaged in those negotiations, does have the authority to talk to anyone. "Israel was consulted on this matter. And look, dialog and talking to people around the world to do what's in the best interest of the American people is something that the president has proven is what he believes is -- is a good faith effort to do what's right for the American people," she told reporters.
A temporary ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, which began January 19, briefly halted the violence in Gaza but has since collapsed. (end)
