White House demands public apology from Zelensky
(MENAFN) The White House has reportedly made it clear that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky must publicly apologize for his behavior during a heated meeting with US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance if he hopes to resume negotiations on a rare earths deal.
According to Fox News, an unnamed US official said that no progress will be made on the minerals agreement unless Zelensky issues a formal apology for his conduct during the confrontational exchange at the White House last Friday. The altercation has stalled the deal, which would have allowed the US access to Ukraine's natural resources.
Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy reported that senior White House officials are demanding an apology from Zelensky, stating, "Nothing's going to happen with this minerals deal until Zelensky makes an explicit public apology for the way that he behaved in the Oval Office."
Despite the tensions, Zelensky expressed willingness to continue dialogue with Washington and sign the agreement in a BBC interview on Sunday. However, Zelensky told Fox News that he did not feel an apology was necessary.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested Zelensky should apologize for "wasting our time" and turning the meeting into a "fiasco."
National Security Adviser Mike Waltz criticized Zelensky for his refusal to engage in peace talks, stressing that continuing the conflict indefinitely is not a viable option. He warned that if Zelensky’s motivations diverge from ending the war, it could pose a significant problem for US relations with Ukraine.
