Kallas demands ‘new leader of free world’
(MENAFN) European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has suggested that the United States can no longer claim the role of "leader of the free world" following a tense confrontation between U.S. President Donald trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the White House.
During Friday's meeting, which also included Vice President J.D. Vance, Trump criticized Zelensky for his lack of gratitude toward the U.S. and his reluctance to negotiate peace with Russia. The encounter ended abruptly, with Zelensky leaving the White House without signing an agreement granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s natural resources or holding a joint press conference.
Reacting to the fallout, Kallas expressed solidarity with Ukraine on social media, stating, “We stand by Ukraine,” and pledging that the EU would "step up support" for Kiev. She also declared that “the free world needs a new leader,” suggesting that Europe must now take on that responsibility.
Kallas has previously accused Trump of echoing "Russian narratives" regarding the Ukraine conflict and voiced concern over Washington’s shifting stance toward its European allies. She also dismissed recent criticisms of EU democracy made by Vance at the Munich Security Conference, remarks that Trump praised as “brilliant.”
In recent weeks, Trump has intensified his criticism of Ukraine’s leadership, referring to Zelensky as a “dictator without elections” and suggesting that Kiev contributed to the escalation of hostilities in 2022.
During the White House meeting, Trump told Zelensky, “I have empowered you to be a tough guy… but you are not acting at all thankful, and that is not a nice thing. What you are doing is very disrespectful to this country.”
The confrontation has deepened divisions between Washington and Brussels, with Kallas’ remarks signaling a push for Europe to assert greater leadership on the global stage.
