As first stage of Gaza ceasefire ends, UN leader calls for 'maximum restraint'
(MENAFN) As the initial stage of Gaza ceasefire truce ends, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Israel and Hamas on Saturday to apply “maximum restraint.”
In a remark by Guterres’s representative, he stressed on avoiding any turning back to conflicts, which would lead to “catastrophic” outcomes.
He stated: “The past six weeks have provided a fragile but vital reprieve, offering a measure of relief to both Palestinians and Israelis.”
Guterres called on all involved sides to “find a way forward on the next phase” of the pact, underscoring that a lasting halt to hostilities and the freeing of all captives are crucial to avoiding additional conflict.
The remark also noted: “The Secretary-General continues to call for the dignified, immediate, and unconditional release of all hostages.”
Guterres further stressed on the importance of safeguarding the lives of citizens, humanitarian employees, and other individuals under protection, while also highlighting the need to sustain humanitarian aid.
