Experts urge tactics to reinforce climate resilience in agriculture
(MENAFN) Confronted with erratic weather patterns, severe temperatures, and water deficiency, the agricultural industry is on the frontline of the climate change crisis.
Farmers are facing difficulties to shield their crops, with experts anticipate that conditions will continue to worsen even further.
Sohaib Ayyad, an agricultural engineer specializing in seeds, fertilizers, as well as pesticides, emphasized, “Climate change has significantly disrupted agriculture."
He also noted that planting seasons are changing, with insufficient rainfall delaying crop growth. In response, farmers are being forced to adopt costly strategies to safeguard their harvests.
The effect is evident in key crops such as wheat and barley. As Ayyad pointed out, “This time last year, wheat and barley stood at 20-30 cm. This year, they barely reach 10-15 cm.”
Ayyad further clarified, “Garlic, for example, requires a temperature range of 17 to 25 degrees to grow naturally. If it gets too cold, farmers have to spend more on protection. This week’s forecasted temperatures could be disastrous.". It’s clear that severe temperatures are another challenge resulted by climate change.
