Zelensky outlines his key demands for Israel-style guarantees
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has outlined his key demands for security guarantees in a potential peace agreement with Russia in an interview with NBC News. He stressed the importance of significant military assistance, swift European Union membership, and protection arrangements similar to those Israel receives. Zelensky emphasized that any agreement must involve direct participation from Ukraine and reiterated the security measures he wants included in a peace deal.
These demands come ahead of planned talks between Russian and US officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Zelensky’s list includes deploying a substantial missile defense system in Ukraine, which he said would only be used if Russia invades, along with the creation of a powerful military force comparable to Russia's. He also called for immediate EU membership for Ukraine.
Furthermore, Zelensky requested security guarantees similar to those provided to Israel, pointing out that despite Israel not being a NATO member, the US, France, the UK, and other nations defended Israel during attacks from Iran. He suggested NATO members should pledge to protect Ukraine, for example, by intercepting Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory.
At the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky reiterated similar demands after the US stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership was unlikely. He argued that if Ukraine is excluded from NATO, it would need to build its own massive military force.
US President Donald Trump has reiterated that while the US is committed to supporting peace efforts, NATO membership for Ukraine is not an option. Trump also emphasized that EU nations should take on a greater role in ensuring regional security and ruled out the deployment of US troops in Ukraine, though he expressed willingness to let European allies purchase US weapons for Ukraine’s defense. Meanwhile, Russia insists that any peace deal must address Ukraine’s neutral status and acknowledge the new territorial realities.
Reports suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump are expected to meet later this month, with both delegations already working on preparations for the summit in Riyadh.
