Putin shares his views on recent high-level Russia-US talks held in Riyadh
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin shared his views on the recent high-level Russia-US talks held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, calling them a “first step” toward normalizing relations between Moscow and Washington. Speaking in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, Putin expressed optimism that the discussions could lead to cooperation in key areas such as arms control, space exploration, and energy.
He criticized the reactions from the EU and Kiev, calling them unwarranted and exaggerated. Putin explained that the primary aim of the Riyadh meeting was to restore relations between Russia and the US, emphasizing that there is no need for intermediaries in their discussions.
Putin stated that Moscow is open to talks with Kiev and EU nations, recalling that Ukraine withdrew from negotiations in 2022. He reiterated that Russia is ready to return to the peace process whenever Ukraine and the EU are prepared for dialogue. He emphasized that both Russia and the US expect Ukraine to join in eventual peace talks.
When asked about a potential meeting with US President Donald Trump, Putin said he would be “glad” to meet Trump, praising their past working relationship. However, he stressed that any future meeting would require thorough preparation to find mutually acceptable solutions.
Putin also addressed the recent Ukrainian drone attack on a US-linked oil pumping station in Russia, suggesting that such an attack could only have been carried out with the help of satellite intelligence from Ukraine’s Western allies.
While Putin did not provide a specific timeline for a meeting with Trump, he reiterated Russia’s openness to discussions and expressed a desire for the dialogue to take place.
