Zelensky claims US-Russia conference in Riyadh will ‘have no results’

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine will not participate in the upcoming US-Russia talks in Riyadh, considering them irrelevant and claiming they will yield no results. The high-level discussions, led by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are set to take place on Tuesday, marking the first significant negotiations between the two countries over Ukraine since 2022.

Zelensky expressed to reporters that Ukraine was unaware of the talks and views any negotiations regarding the country held without its participation as pointless. He emphasized, “We will not recognize such agreements.”

The Ukrainian leader also clarified that his visit to Saudi Arabia on the same day had no connection to the US-Russia talks, as it had been planned before the US decision to meet Russia.

Meanwhile, Russian foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov confirmed that the negotiations would not involve third parties, stating that the purpose was to lay the groundwork for ending the Ukraine conflict and normalize US-Russia relations.

As tensions continue, Zelensky’s criticism follows US actions that have seemingly undermined Ukraine’s position, including former President Trump’s call with Russian President Putin and his refusal to commit to NATO membership for Ukraine. Moscow has insisted that any peace settlement must address Ukraine’s NATO ambitions and other “root causes” of the conflict.
