Macron reveals discussing with Saudi prince Ukraine conflict
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has revealed he recently spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss the ongoing Ukraine conflict and the EU’s potential role in achieving peace. The conversation took place ahead of a meeting between U.S. and Russian delegates in Riyadh, set for Tuesday.
In a post on X, Macron outlined the topics discussed, including Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and notably Ukraine. He emphasized the role Saudi Arabia could play in fostering a lasting peace, with Europeans at the forefront of the process.
U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg had earlier indicated that European nations might be excluded from the upcoming talks, explaining that Washington preferred to avoid large group discussions. In response, Macron called for an emergency summit of European leaders in Paris to ensure the EU’s involvement in potential peace negotiations. The summit saw attendance from key EU figures such as Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Kellogg defended the exclusion of Western Europe, referencing the failed Minsk Agreements of 2015, in which Germany and France had acted as guarantors but later admitted to signing them mainly to give Ukraine more time to build up its military. He emphasized that the U.S. would not pursue such an approach.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump expressed optimism about a potential resolution of the conflict, revealing that both Moscow and Kiev are eager to end the fighting. Trump's team is reportedly aiming for a ceasefire agreement by Easter, April 20. Kellogg also hinted that a more detailed U.S. peace plan could be presented soon.
