Strawberry Farming In Charsadda Sees A Revolution With Tunnel Farming
This year, farmers in Charsadda adopted tunnel farming, which has not only reduced the crop cycle but also significantly increased revenue.
Tunnel Farming Reduces Crop Duration, Boosts ProfitsAccording to farmers, traditional strawberry cultivation would begin in March, but with tunnel farming, the crop was ready for harvest as early as January this year.

Local farmer Israr Khan shared his experience:
"Tunnel farming has significantly improved our production. Previously, the strawberry season would start in mid-March, but this year, we were able to harvest in January. I sold my first batch for Rs. 1,500 per kilogram, marking the highest-ever profit. However, as supply increased, the price dropped to Rs. 500-550 per kg, yet it remains a profitable venture."
While many farmers acknowledge the benefits of tunnel farming, high costs remain a challenge.
Traditional farmer Muhammad Kamran stated:
"We lack the financial resources to bear the expenses of tunnel farming, such as seeds, pesticides, and fertilizers. However, if conditions remain favorable, we plan to adopt this method next year."
In tunnel farming, strawberry seedlings are planted by late October or early November. Wooden structures, approximately 8 feet long, are placed over the fields and covered with plastic sheets. This helps retain sunlight, increases temperature, and allows strawberries to ripen faster.
Tunnel Farming's Impact on the MarketThis innovative farming method has also positively influenced the local market.
Ahmed Zaib, a fruit market trader in Charsadda, said:
"This year, Charsadda's strawberry production competed with Multan, which usually dominates the market due to its warmer climate. However, thanks to tunnel farming, Charsadda's strawberries reached the market much earlier, resulting in higher prices."
With the success of tunnel farming, Charsadda has the potential to become a major strawberry hub in Pakistan. Modern agricultural techniques have not only increased farmers' incomes but have also created new employment opportunities. In the future, Charsadda's strawberries could even reach international markets.
Towards Sustainable AgricultureThis shift towards modern farming practices is helping farmers combat climate change while ensuring a sustainable and profitable agricultural future.
The transformation in Charsadda's strawberry farming is a promising development. With innovative techniques, local farmers are not only securing better profits but also positioning Charsadda as a key player in Pakistan's strawberry production industry.
