WHO intensifies support for Ebola predicament

(MENAFN) The World health Organization (WHO) has committed an additional $2 million to aid Uganda’s response to its ongoing Ebola outbreak, bringing the total funding to $3 million in just three weeks. This decision follows the recent announcement of six new Ebola cases by Uganda’s Health Ministry, as the nation works to contain the outbreak first identified on January 30.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the new funding via a post on social media, noting that it would support efforts in surveillance, laboratory work, logistics, and infection control in hospitals and treatment centers.

The outbreak was triggered when a 32-year-old male nurse at Mulago National Referral Hospital passed away from organ failure. As of February 10, Uganda reported nine confirmed cases, including one fatality, and is monitoring 265 individuals who had contact with the first case. The eight remaining patients are stable and receiving medical care.

To combat the spread, Uganda, with support from the WHO and other partners, began a clinical trial for a vaccine against the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease (SUDV) on February 3. Ebola, a deadly hemorrhagic fever transmitted via bodily fluids, has a high mortality rate, especially the Sudan variant, which kills at least 40% of those infected.

This is Uganda’s sixth encounter with the Sudan strain, marking its first confirmed Ebola death since 2023. The country's last significant outbreak occurred in 2022 and was declared over after four months.

Russia has also offered support, with its human welfare agency, Rospotrebnadzor, providing a mobile laboratory to help Uganda diagnose infectious diseases swiftly.
