Trudeau assures Canada will never become part of US

(MENAFN) Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s repeated suggestion of making Canada the 51st US state, calling it a “non-starter.” Trump had expressed his desire for Canada to join the US, claiming it would bring benefits like lower taxes and better military protection, though he acknowledged the idea seemed unlikely.

During a visit to Brussels, Trudeau responded, emphasizing that there was no chance of Canada ever becoming part of the US, but stated that the government would continue to stand up for Canada’s sovereignty. Trudeau also noted the strong support from Canadians in response to Trump’s comments, highlighting their efforts to support local businesses and “buy Canadian.”

Trump recently argued that Canada might not be viable without US financial and military support, suggesting that joining the US would solve its challenges. This rhetoric has fueled trade tensions, with Trump imposing tariffs on Canadian imports, to which Trudeau vowed a strong but measured retaliation. Despite the trade conflict, both countries agreed to delay further tariff increases until March.
