S-Africa releases declaration on ICJ case against Israel
(MENAFN) South Africa's Foreign Minister, Ronald Lamola, reaffirmed the country's commitment to pursuing its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), despite opposition from US President Donald Trump. In an interview with the Financial Times, Lamola emphasized that while standing by principles may have consequences, South Africa remains resolute in its pursuit of justice for the world and the rule of law.
South Africa filed the case in December 2023, accusing Israel of committing genocidal acts during its military campaign in Gaza following a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. The case, heard at The Hague-based ICJ, has been met with denial from Israel, which rejects the allegations. The court previously ordered Israel to take steps to prevent acts that could be considered war crimes.
In retaliation, Trump signed a decree halting aid to South Africa, accusing the country of undermining US foreign policy, including its stance on Israel, military ties with Iran, and land expropriation laws. Trump also offered to resettle Afrikaner refugees from South Africa, though they rejected the offer.
Despite the US's threats, Lamola stated that South Africa would not back down from its charges against Israel. South Africa's President, Cyril Ramaphosa, had earlier declared the country would not be bullied by outside pressures. Meanwhile, concerns remain that the Trump administration might revoke South Africa's tariff-free access to US markets under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which could hurt Pretoria's export revenues.
