Ukraine attacks military convoy escorting UN nuclear inspector

(MENAFN) The Russian Ministry of Defense has released footage claiming that Ukraine attacked a military convoy escorting UN inspectors to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Europe’s largest nuclear facility. Moscow accused Ukraine of launching these strikes to hinder the scheduled rotation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitors.

The IAEA began stationing observers at the plant in September 2022 after it came under Russian control. The rotation of personnel requires Ukrainian cooperation, as international travelers must pass through Ukrainian-controlled territory to reach the site. The exchange of staff scheduled for Wednesday was canceled due to "intense military activity," according to the IAEA.

The Russian military footage shows several attacks on the convoy, including artillery shells, mortar rounds, and kamikaze drones. The video displays damage to armored vehicles, which Moscow claims were transporting departing UN inspectors.

The IAEA has not assigned blame but expressed disappointment over the disruption, with Director General Rafael Grossi calling it "completely unacceptable" that staff safety was jeopardized.

Ukraine, on the other hand, accused Russia of attacking its own military personnel as part of a strategy of “nuclear blackmail.” The Ukrainian government alleges that Russia is pressuring the IAEA to use Russian territory exclusively for the movement of its staff.

Russian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova and Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyansky, criticized Ukraine for its actions and its alleged attempts to disrupt the IAEA’s work, particularly concerning the ZNPP and surrounding areas.
