Pentagon assures China is key defense priority for US
(MENAFN) The United States is shifting its military priorities to address China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific and to secure its own borders, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday. Speaking at a defense conference in Brussels with NATO and non-NATO countries supporting Ukraine, Hegseth highlighted a strategic pivot, urging European allies to take more responsibility for their own security.
He stressed that the US faces "consequential threats" to its homeland, with China identified as the main challenge due to its military capabilities and ambitions in the region. Hegseth emphasized that Washington is prioritizing deterrence in the Indo-Pacific to avoid war with China and ensure national security.
The US-China rivalry continues to escalate, with both nations expanding their military presence in the region. US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have criticized China’s actions and policies, warning that Beijing’s military buildup and economic strategies pose a growing threat. However, China has denied these allegations, accusing the US of destabilizing the region and inflating the "China threat" narrative.
