Fernando Berguido And 'The Collapse Of Panama': The World's First Narco-State

(MENAFN- Newsroom Panama) Since my early involvement in the Newspaper Biz that started in the 60's, and my later involvement in on-air radio and television work, my experience as a journalist took me through many North, Central, and South American historical events and stories.
My specific interests involved coverage of Pablo Escobar in Colombia and Manuel Antonio Noriega in Panama.
The last years of the Noriega dictatorship (1968-1989), the invasion and the rebirth of democracy, were some of my most favorite Panama topics.
In those dire years, many, many things were experienced that only a few knew in detail, but not the whole story – as in my case – as we had limited access to fragments of the whole story.
The author Fernando Berguido gathered most of that history through an extensive investigation that takes us through the rough paths of the worst political, economic, social, moral and institutional crisis of the country in all its republican life.

This new book attempts to answer some of those tough questions that are present in the country's memory. Was it necessary to invade to capture Noriega or dismantle the Defense Forces? Why did Noriega systematically refuse to give up power? How many deaths did the invasion in Panama leave and what was the cost to the American Army? What did Noriega forget when he planned to resist a potential invasion by the United States? Who was behind the clandestine broadcasts of the Voice of Freedom, which interrupted the military propaganda programs on National Radio? Who set fire to El Chorrillo? How did Noriega get to the Nunciature, how did he leave there and who was also there? If you need those answers, it is best to buy the book and spend some hours by the fireplace to find out another piece of Central American history. I will let you know my thoughts on this book. Looking forward to the read........
