Iranian minister affirms integrity of recent presidential elections

(MENAFN) Iran’s Minister of Interior, Ahmad Vahidi, addressed the recent presidential election on Sunday, affirming that the process adhered to principles of impartiality and integrity. His comments came during a ceremony where Masoud Pezeshkian was officially endorsed as the new president of Iran.

Vahidi emphasized the Ministry's dedication to organizing the election within 35 days of the sudden death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in May. He described the task as a significant responsibility but also a point of pride for the Islamic Republic. A comprehensive plan for the election was formulated through meetings among the heads of government branches. To facilitate the election, an election headquarters, various committees, and 1,300 executive boards were established both within Iran and internationally. Initially, 80 individuals registered for the election, but the Guardian Council approved only six candidates.

The election took place over two rounds, on June 28 and July 5, across more than 58,000 polling stations, with 600,000 individuals overseeing the ballot boxes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated voting for Iranians living abroad, with elections held in 98 countries. Vahidi underscored the importance of impartiality and non-partisan engagement throughout the election process.

Masoud Pezeshkian emerged victorious in the presidential race, securing 16,384,403 votes in the second round, which saw a voter turnout of 49.68 percent. Pezeshkian, a former health minister and a five-time member of the Iranian parliament, will succeed the late President Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran on May 19. With his official decree from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, now issued, Pezeshkian is scheduled to head to the Iranian parliament on Tuesday for endorsement from his former colleagues.
