First deaths from sporadic illness recorded in Brazil

(MENAFN) Brazilian health officials have confirmed the world's first fatalities attributed to the Oropouche virus, a tropical illness transmitted by infected flies and mosquitoes, according to a statement released by the country's health ministry.

Oropouche fever, named after the region in Trinidad and Tobago where it was initially identified in 1954, is caused by a virus spread primarily through bites from midges and mosquitoes carrying the infection. The disease typically originates from sloths and can lead to severe symptoms resembling those of dengue fever.

The victims, both women from Bahia in northeastern Brazil and under 30 years old with no underlying health conditions, displayed symptoms akin to a severe case of dengue, including fever, muscle aches, joint stiffness, headache, vomiting, nausea, chills, and light sensitivity. Their deaths mark the first documented fatalities from Oropouche virus globally.

Brazil's health ministry reported a total of 7,236 confirmed cases of Oropouche infection in 2024, primarily concentrated in the Amazonas and Rondonia states. The virus was first isolated in Brazil in 1960, and since then, sporadic cases have been reported across Central and South America, particularly in regions surrounding the Amazon basin.

Currently, Brazilian health authorities are investigating an additional suspected death related to Oropouche fever in Santa Catarina, as well as six potential cases where the virus may have been transmitted from mother to child, resulting in two fetal deaths.

The ministry highlighted that symptoms of Oropouche disease typically persist for three to six days and mirror those of dengue fever. Given the similarities in symptoms, accurate diagnosis and prompt medical intervention are crucial for managing cases and preventing further spread of the virus.
