Social Development Minister Announces Doubling Aid Fund Coverage To 235,000 Families

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - Minister of Social Development and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Women's Empowerment Wafaa Bani Mustafa said that the ministry, in cooperation with its partners, is implementing the National Social Protection Strategy under Royal directives and is in the process of reviewing it to align with the three modernisation paths: political, economic, and administrative.

During an interview on Jordanian TV, Bani Mustafa noted that the coverage for families benefiting from the National Aid Fund has doubled with the expansion of the fund's services to include 235,000 families.

She also emphasised addressing the poverty gap for eligible families and noted that the number of new families benefiting from the cash assistance programme this year reached 15,000.

She highlighted that Jordan has made significant achievements in this field, as reported by the World Bank and ESCWA.

She also highlighted the importance of the economic empowerment programme implemented by the National Aid Fund, which plays a role in transitioning families from aid dependency to becoming sustainably productive.

Bani Mustafa also stressed the importance of amending regulations to allow families with a working member to benefit from the graduation programme for one year and two years through the productive families programme.

She emphasised the importance of the Social Development Law in regulating fundraising and donation campaigns by obtaining proper approvals and referring any violations to the judiciary.

the minister also noted that the ministry has issued over 300 fundraising approvals since the beginning of 2024, including approvals for donations to the Palestinians in Gaza.

Bani Mustafa discussed the services provided by the ministry for persons with disabilities and its efforts to shift from a protective to a rights-based approach as part of the ten-year strategy for persons with disabilities.

She also highlighted the expansion of persons with disabilities services through 29 inclusive centres across the kingdom and 27 early intervention units providing physical therapy, hearing, and speech services from birth to six years old, enabling children to become self-reliant.

Regarding services for the elderly, Bani Mustafa pointed out the existence of nine volunteer centres serving about 400 elderly people, with the ministry covering the costs for 180 of those in need.

Bani Mustafa noted a decrease in the number of arrests related to begging this year compared with previous years.

The decline is attributed to their referral to the judiciary, intensified campaigns, and cooperation with partner entities.

She noted that the ministry provides social services to beggars under 18 years old in two centres, one for males and one for females, as they are considered in need of care and protection under the current Juvenile Law.
