Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu encounters protests since arriving in Washington

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has encountered significant protests since arriving in Washington, D.C., late Monday. This visit followed President Joe Biden's announcement that he was ending his re-election campaign and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate for the upcoming election.

As Netanyahu prepared to speak at a joint session of Congress, dozens of Democratic lawmakers chose not to attend in protest. Demonstrations were held against Israel's ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of at least 39,100 Palestinians. Protesters called for an immediate cease-fire in the region.

On Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of demonstrators assembled in the Cannon Rotunda inside the Capitol building, chanting against Netanyahu’s policies in Gaza. Capitol Police reported that around 200 people were arrested during the protest. Additionally, protests continued outside the Watergate Hotel, where Netanyahu was staying, with demonstrators making noise to disrupt his rest.

In a dramatic turn, social media posts indicated that protesters released maggots at the hotel. The Palestinian Youth Movement shared a video on X showing maggots and mealworms on a table with Israeli and American flags, claiming it was a form of protest against Netanyahu and his allies. The hotel has since responded, stating that it took necessary measures to sanitize the area and that operations have returned to normal.
