Israel informs UN following Tel Aviv drone strike: Iran ‘head of snake’

(MENAFN) In a recent emergency session at the United Nations Security Council, Israel vehemently called for the imposition of severe sanctions against Iran in response to a drone attack on Tel Aviv. The appeal, made by Israel’s deputy ambassador Noa Furman, emphasized the need for the international community to take decisive preventive measures against Tehran. This call to action follows an incident where a drone, claimed by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, struck a residential building near the US embassy branch office in Tel Aviv, resulting in the death of one civilian and injuries to at least ten others.

During his address, Mr. Furman depicted Iran as the primary antagonist in the region, describing it as “the head of the snake” that is arming, training, and financing the Houthis. He urged the global community to ramp up pressure on Tehran by enforcing more crippling sanctions. “Iran’s actions continue to threaten the stability of the Middle East and the entire world,” he asserted, highlighting the broader implications of Tehran's military and strategic maneuvers.

Mr. Furman also accused Iran of directly supplying arms to the Houthis in Yemen, which are then used against Israel. He specifically pointed out that the port of Hodeidah, rather than being an innocuous port, is utilized for terrorist purposes, making it a legitimate military target in his view. “These are pieces of Iranian military equipment that are assembled and used by the Houthis,” Mr. Furman stated, underscoring the tangible threat posed by these activities.

The session, requested by France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, aimed to address the destabilizing actions of the Houthis in the Middle East, particularly in light of the recent drone attack on Tel Aviv. The Security Council convened on Friday following the incident, which has heightened tensions and underscored the volatile security situation in the region. Israel’s call for action reflects its growing concerns over Iran’s influence and its role in perpetuating conflict through proxies like the Houthis.
