South Korea questions first lady in luxury handbag gift scandal

(MENAFN) South Korean prosecutors have recently interrogated the country’s first lady, Kim Keon-hee, in connection with allegations that she accepted a luxury handbag and other high-value gifts from a religious figure. According to South Korean news sources, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office conducted the questioning at an undisclosed government location on Saturday. The investigation centers on claims that Kim received a Christian Dior handbag valued at approximately 3 million won (around USD2,175) and other costly items from Korean-American pastor Choi Jae-young in September 2022, allegedly in exchange for certain favors.

The controversy emerged when Kim's assistant informed prosecutors earlier this month that Kim had instructed her to return the handbag shortly after receiving it from Pastor Choi. However, the assistant admitted to forgetting to return the item due to being overwhelmed with other responsibilities. This development has added a layer of complexity to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Kim’s alleged receipt of expensive gifts.
