Eurasian Economic Commission to review Iran’s observer status in September meeting

(MENAFN) The minister responsible for trade at the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has announced that the commission will review Iran's application for observer status during its upcoming meeting in Yerevan, Armenia, scheduled for late September. In a recent phone conversation with Kazem Jalali, Iran's ambassador in Moscow, Andrey Slepnev highlighted that the meeting will feature several programs designed to showcase Iran's economic and commercial strengths to the EEC member states.

Slepnev expressed optimism about accelerating Iran’s cooperation with the Eurasian Union. Jalali echoed this sentiment, describing the Eurasian Union as a significant opportunity for regional collaboration and affirming that Iran's relations with the union will continue to strengthen under the new government administration.

Iran has been actively pursuing observer status in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) following the signing of a free trade agreement with the union. Jalali had previously voiced hope in April that the agreement, signed in December 2023, would soon be implemented pending approval from the EAEU member states’ parliaments. He made these comments during the second International Russia-Iran Cooperation in the Changing World conference, held in Moscow with Iranian and Russian experts.

In his remarks, Jalali also highlighted the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), emphasizing its potential benefits for EAEU members, including economic growth and enhanced regional security. Additionally, Jalali condemned the Israeli regime’s actions in Gaza as a stark example of injustice and criticized the current global order, which he views as overly unilateral.
