India, China pledge to ‘redouble efforts’ to solve border quarrel

(MENAFN) India and China have pledged to "redouble efforts" through both diplomatic and military channels to seek an "early resolution" to their enduring border disputes, as stated by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. This commitment was made following Jaishankar's meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The two countries share a roughly defined 3,440-kilometer (2,100-mile) border known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Himalayan region, which has been the backdrop for numerous skirmishes over the years. The last significant escalation occurred in June 2020 when clashes in the contested Galwan Valley led to casualties on both sides.

After the discussions in Astana, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of respecting the LAC and maintaining peace and tranquility in the border regions. He highlighted that "mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest" will be the guiding principles for fostering bilateral relations moving forward.

Earlier this year, in April, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the need for both nations to "urgently address" the ongoing border issues and rectify the "abnormality" in their relationship. Modi's previous engagement with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, also focused on resolving the differences related to the border.

Since the Galwan incident in 2020, India and China have conducted over 20 rounds of talks regarding the border situation, with the most recent discussions occurring in March this year. Despite these efforts, there has been little progress toward a resolution. The Indian Foreign Ministry has reported that both sides have agreed to sustain "regular contact" through diplomatic and military channels in an effort to uphold peace along the contentious border.E: Here’s why India needs BRICS and Russia
