Iran denies participation in Trump killing attempt
(MENAFN) Iran has officially denied any involvement in an alleged assassination attempt against Donald Trump, the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. Despite this denial, Iranian officials assert that Trump must ultimately face consequences for the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military leader, in 2020.
According to the news agency, United States authorities received information suggesting Tehran was plotting to kill Trump, leading the Secret Service to enhance security measures around the former president. This heightened vigilance did not prevent an armed attack during a rally in Pennsylvania, where a gunman identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire. The incident resulted in one death and two injuries, with Crooks being killed by Trump’s security detail. Reports clarified that there was no evidence linking Crooks to the purported Iranian plot.
In response to the assassination allegations, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani vehemently rejected any claims of Tehran's involvement, describing them as politically motivated and unfounded. He emphasized that Iran condemns the recent armed attack on Trump and considers these accusations to be rooted in malicious intent.
Despite the denial of involvement in the assassination attempt, Kanaani reaffirmed Iran's commitment to seeking legal action against Trump for his role in Soleimani's death. Soleimani was the commander of the Quds Force, a key unit within Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known for its covert operations.
This situation reflects the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, particularly following significant events such as the targeted killing of Soleimani, which has contributed to strained relations and ongoing disputes over accountability and international conduct.
