UN: Israel hits 5 UN schools in Gaza during last 10 days

(MENAFN) In the past ten days, five schools run by the United Nations and its agencies have been severely impacted by Israeli bombings in Gaza, as reported by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) on Tuesday. The agency noted that one of its schools in Gaza City was struck while serving as a shelter for families seeking refuge from the violence. Just the day before, another UNRWA school in Nuseirat was also hit, further illustrating the precarious situation for civilians in the region.

UNRWA's statement lamented the ongoing crisis, declaring, "Nine months in, the relentless, endless killings, destruction, and despair continue," and underscored that no one in Gaza feels safe amidst the turmoil. Since the outbreak of hostilities following a cross-border attack by Palestinian resistance group Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israel has launched extensive military operations across the Gaza Strip. These military actions have resulted in the deaths of over 38,000 Palestinians, with widespread destruction turning much of the densely populated enclave into ruins.

The humanitarian implications are dire, as the conflict has left a vast majority of civilians homeless and facing severe risks of famine and deprivation. In light of these events, the situation has escalated to the point where a genocide case has been initiated against Israel at the International Court of Justice, drawing global attention to the humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold in the region. The ongoing violence has not only devastated infrastructure but has also created a profound sense of despair and insecurity among the population, raising urgent calls for international intervention and support.
