Africa Pins Big Expectations On COP29 In Azerbaijan

The issues of climate finance and mitigation are very important for the African continent because, in parallel with measures to mitigate the impact of the activities of certain enterprises on the environment (mitigation), there should be additional funding for environmental protection measures, elimination of damage already caused, a representative of Kenya's Office of Emission Reduction, Sensing and Forestry Development Jacob Ndirangu Kimani told Trend .

"Climate finance has been hotly debated since COP27, which was held in Egypt in 2022. Africa is of interest to the world with its many resources, but the responsibility of companies for the environmental impact of their operations in Africa is important. I think that the discussion at the upcoming COP29 in Baku on increasing climate finance, separate discussions on the situation on the African continent will have a positive effect on solving pressing problems," Kimani noted.

According to him, Kenya itself does not have large greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the moment, as the green development strategy of this country is underway.

"There is a massive greening of areas in the Republic of Kenya, we aim to plant tens of millions of tree seedlings to help combat all sorts of emissions into the atmosphere," Kimani remarked.

In general, he stated, that protecting nature should become the norm for everyone. "We have one planet, we should ask ourselves every day - 'What can we do to protect it?". In addition to the fact that global coordination is important, we also need personal responsibility for the fate of the planet".

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan in November this year. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks Baku, having become the center of the world, will host about 70,000-80,000 foreign guests.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the convention. Unless the parties have decided otherwise, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
