Heavy rains in China result in 6 deaths, widespread damage

(MENAFN) Heavy rains have caused significant devastation in parts of China, resulting in multiple fatalities and widespread damage. State media reported that at least six people lost their lives in southwestern Chongqing Municipality due to the unprecedented rainfall. Two individuals drowned, while four others died as a result of geological disasters triggered by the heavy downpours.

The severe weather conditions also led to intense rainstorms in Dianjiang County starting Wednesday night, prompting local authorities to issue alerts for 15 rivers in response to the heavy precipitation.

Across China, various regions spanning its 34 administrative divisions have been grappling with severe rainfall over recent weeks, which has tragically resulted in nearly 70 casualties. The consequential floods and landslides have inflicted extensive damage on infrastructure and homes.

In southern Tibet, along the border with Nepal, over 130 people, including tourists, found themselves stranded on Wednesday after landslides caused by heavy rains washed away roads. Similarly, in the mountainous southern Hunan province, authorities worked tirelessly for four days to repair breaches in Dongting Lake, the country’s second-largest freshwater body located in Huarong County. The flooding from the lake displaced around 7,000 people, highlighting the scale of the natural disasters affecting the region.

To address the urgent needs of those affected, China's finance ministry has allocated approximately $187 million in emergency funds since late June. These funds are aimed at providing relief and support to individuals and communities impacted by the severe weather conditions, underscoring the government's commitment to mitigating the effects of the ongoing crisis.
