Key Partner Quits Nepali Government
“We have submitted our resignations to the prime minister. We have also informed him that our party has withdrawn its support to the government,” Padam Giri, the outgoing minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs, said.
As the CPN-UML has withdrawn its support, Dahal now needs to take a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives within 30 days.
The CPN-UML sealed an agreement with the main opposition Nepali Congress party, on Monday night, to form a new coalition government.
As the largest parties in the lower house, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML had called on Dahal to step down, but he chose to take a vote of trust in the lower house.
Dahal is the chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre), and he came to power again as the head of a coalition government in Dec, 2022, as the general election in Nov produced no majority party in the lower house.
During his tenure, Dahal has formed alliances with both the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML.– NNN-XINHUA
