Iran, Bahrain start negotiations to release frozen banking resources

Date:

(MENAFN) The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has announced the initiation of negotiations between senior Iranian and Bahraini banking officials aimed at releasing the frozen foreign resources of the CBI and other Iranian banks held in Bahrain. This development marks a significant step towards resolving long-standing financial constraints.

A meeting took place on June 23 between the Deputy for International Affairs of the Central Bank of Iran and the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain. During this meeting, both parties underscored the importance of releasing Iran's foreign exchange resources in Bahrain through a technical framework based on mutual respect. The Iranian state news agency IRNA reported these details on Monday, citing sources from the CBI.

The discussions delved into the root causes of the frozen assets issue and identified the obstacles preventing resolution. Both sides proposed potential solutions to these challenges, expressing optimism that concrete results could be achieved in the near future.

The two central banks agreed to continue these specialized talks following the political discussions held by the Bahraini Foreign Minister in Tehran. The continuation of these negotiations is scheduled to take place in either Tehran or Manama in the coming days and will persist until a satisfactory outcome is reached.

Although the Central Bank of Iran retains the option to pursue legal action in international courts, as authorized by the Iranian parliament in recent months, both parties remain hopeful that negotiations and technical solutions will yield quicker and more favorable results.

In May, Abdul Nabi Salman, the Deputy Speaker of the Bahraini Parliament, announced that Bahrain and Iran were moving towards restoring diplomatic relations with the support of Russia. He emphasized the importance of fostering good neighborly relations between the two countries, signaling a positive shift in their bilateral ties.

This ongoing dialogue and the potential release of frozen assets represent a significant development in Iran-Bahrain relations, indicating a mutual willingness to resolve financial and diplomatic issues through constructive engagement.
