CAIRO, June 5 (KUNA) - Egypt and Iran concurred Wednesday on the need to address their outstanding issues to pave the way for restoring normal relations to achieve interests of the two nations and support regional stability.
This came in a phone call by Iran's Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri to Egyptian Minister Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry today.
"The call touched on issues related to bilateral relations between Egypt and Iran. The two ministers agreed on the importance of continuing efforts to develop bilateral relations to address all outstanding issues, paving the way for the restoration of normal relations," Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ambassador Ahmed Abu-Zeid said in a statement.
"This would be based on principles of mutual respect and good neighbourliness, aiming to achieve the interests of both the Egyptian and Iranian peoples and support regional stability."
Abu-Zeid also noted that the discussion also addressed the situation in the Gaza Strip, where Minister Shoukry highlighted the efforts made by Egyptian and Qatari mediation, supported by the United States, to reach a deal for a truce that would allow the exchange of captives and detainees and the delivery of aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza as well as paves the way for a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
At the end of the call, the two ministers agreed to maintain ongoing consultations regarding bilateral relations and to explore ways to resolve the current crisis in Gaza, addressing the related challenges at both regional and international levels. (end)
