Netherlands gives permission to Ukraine to use its jets to attack Russia

(MENAFN) The Netherlands has granted Ukraine the freedom to use the 24 F-16 fighter jets it will receive in any manner it deems necessary, Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren revealed to Politico. This stance differs from Belgium’s approach, despite being a partner in the 'F-16 coalition' and offering 30 jets to Ukraine. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has stipulated that weapons supplied by Belgium, including aircraft, can only be used within territories claimed by Kiev as Ukrainian.

Ollongren clarified this distinction during an interview at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. She emphasized that the Dutch principle for all military aid to Ukraine is consistent: once delivered, it is up to Ukraine to decide how to utilize the capabilities, provided they comply with international law.

Western nations, including the United States, Denmark, and Norway, are providing Ukrainian pilots with training on operating the United States-designed F-16 fighter jets. The long-awaited transfer of these aircraft to Ukraine may commence within months, according to coalition members. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen recently indicated that the 19 F-16s pledged by Denmark could be used to target military facilities on Russian territory, potentially weakening Moscow’s forces.

Ukrainian officials are hopeful that the addition of United States military technology will shift the battlefield advantage in their favor, as Russia currently maintains overwhelming air superiority on the front lines.
