ICRC Expresses Gratitude To Azerbaijan For Exceptional Demining Efforts

Azerbaijan has beencarrying out successful reconstruction works in the territoriesliberated from Occupation over the past few years, Erik Tollefsen,Head of the Weapons Danger Division of the International Committeeof the Red Cross (ICRC) Department of Nature Conservation andEssential Services, said, Trend reports.

He made the remark during the panel discussion themed“BuildingNational Skills for Sustainable Environmental Rehabilitation” atthe conference“Reducing the Impact of Mines on the Environment -Mobilizing Resources for a Safe and Green Future.”

He noted that in Azerbaijan, he witnessed ecologically competentdemining for the first time.

“We thank Azerbaijan for such a professional approach. We haveclose ties with the Azerbaijani Red Crescent Society. Based on whatI saw yesterday in the liberated territories, I can say thatAzerbaijan has a lot to learn from, and its experience should bestudied. We should use new equipment and machinery for deminingwork. This is one of the factors affecting the success of thedemining process,” he added.

The second day of the traditional international humanitarianconference on demining was held in Baku under the jointorganization of the Mine Action Agency of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) andthe United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The theme of the III International Humanitarian DeminingConference, held on May 30-31, this year, is“Reducing the Impactof Mines on the Environment: Mobilizing Resources for a Safe andGreen Future.”
