Azerbaijan Bans Use Of Number Of Toxic Substances

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 21. Azerbaijan has bannedthe use and circulation of 238 highly toxic substances, aligningwith the best international practices to protect public health andthe environment, chairman of the Food Security Agency of AzerbaijanGoshgar Tahmazli said during the“Towards a Green World” PlantHealth Forum, Trend reports.
He noted that the "Coordination Commission on the Coordinationof Activities of State Bodies in Ensuring the Safe Operation ofPotentially Hazardous Facilities," established by PresidentialOrder No. 3488 on September 24, 2022, based on studies andproposals by the Agency, approved the "Action Plan for EliminatingExisting Problems in Areas of Azerbaijan Contaminated with Unusableand Prohibited Pesticides and Agrochemicals."
“To implement the measures outlined in the plan, working groupscomposed of representatives from relevant structures conductedpreliminary assessments to determine the residual amounts ofunusable and banned pesticides and agrochemicals at 14 sites across11 districts. Monitoring revealed approximately 5,088 cubic metersof unusable substances and contaminated soil at 11 sites. The workin this direction continues,” the official added.
To note, in line with the President of Azerbaijan's decreedeclaring 2024 as the“Green World Solidarity Year” and marking theInternational Day of Plant Health, the Plant Health Forum titled“Towards a Green World” kicked off in Baku.
The forum, scheduled to take place on May 21–22, aims to createa platform for collaboration on protecting plants and plantproducts from pests, promoting plant health through pest control,and expanding production. It also seeks to ensure the safe trade ofplants and plant products, enhance global food security, andconserve biodiversity. Participants include national plant healthinstitutions, regional and international organizations, governmentagencies, and experts.
