Iranian authorities report significant explosion in Shiraz city
(MENAFN) Local authorities reported a significant explosion on Saturday near Lake Bakhtegan, in the vicinity of the southern Iranian city of Shiraz.
Gulamreza Gulami, the crisis management director in Fars province, confirmed the occurrence of a massive explosion in Shiraz while speaking to Iran's state television.
The official dismissed assertions suggesting that the explosion resulted from a plane or helicopter crash in the region.
“The cause of the explosion is unknown, but according to the follow-up from Shiraz airport, there was no passenger plane or helicopter crash in the region,” the director stated.
“The army's air defense unit also confirmed the sound of a large explosion in the area. Local authorities, police and military units are investigating the issue,” Gulami added.
There are no residential areas around Lake Bakhtegan.
On Wednesday, at least two powerful explosions occurred in the southeastern city of Kerman, near the cemetery where Iran's former top military commander, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, is buried.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks, resulting in the tragic loss of 91 lives.
