Doha, Qatar: In the digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed industries, but with its growth comes pressing concerns about data privacy. The need for data to fuel the technology increases the risk of misuse without guiding principles and boundaries, experts discussed at the Doha Forum 2023, yesterday.

Addressing a forum at the session entitled 'Securing Data in an AI Driven Era' Abdulrahman Ali Al Malki, President, National cyber Security Agency, discussed the challenges and strategies of ensuring privacy within AI systems, exploring both technical safeguards and ethical considerations.

“Cybersecurity was not a challenge to the development rather it led to updating the systems and developing the emerging companies and government reaching their goals peacefully without facing any risks.”

“AI is a natural development, it's like cloud engineering, development of the Internet that happened before. We need to help the parties that use AI. AI gives huge opportunities for people working in the field of cybersecurity to solve problems, bridge the gaps and to identify the problems. That is why AI is tool for cybersecurity officials in different countries,” he added.

He further noted that AI has its own limitations as it has certain ethical issues. For example, false information might limit the decision that we might face based on the results of the AI. We can use the AI to come up with findings that are false, misleading and lead to certain ethical problems. Therefore, we need to try to find solutions for these problems and legislations related to AI.

“We have launched series of initiatives and have established the National Committee for AI in Qatar. We have taken initiative to start preparing our guidelines and how to use the AI that will allow the users to protect their systems. We have also launched workshops to raise awareness in some of the sectors,” Al Malki added.

Muznah Siddiqui, Global Governance Research and Planning Associate, United Nations University Center for Policy Research discussed about how AI on one side is making work of cybersecurity easier and faster but on other side in the same speed it is creating challenges. She also shared insights regarding how AI affecting leadership in regulatory bodies.

The issue of data privacy is one of the key issues. Data forms the bed rock of AI and one of the main considerations for the regulators will be to develop a parallel process that governs AI.

AI is developing at such a rapid pace,“we need to develop systems of governance that are agile and that means that we need to look not only at the technicalities of the technology but also find solutions that are long lasting and sustainable.”

Mike Liu, Vice President, Senior Fellow of CCG, Former Managing Director of DXC Technology, Greater China; Nudhara Yusuf, Executive Coordinator of the Global Governance Innovation Network, Stimson Center, Amr Awadallah: CEO & Co-Founder, Vectara, Inc also participated in the panel discussion.
