(MENAFN) In a landmark development, Finland has finalized an agreement to procure Israel's advanced David's Sling air defense system, marking the first instance of a foreign nation acquiring this cutting-edge technology. The Israeli Defense Ministry lauded the deal as "historic," emphasizing its significance in enhancing Finland's air defense capabilities. The estimated value of the purchase stands at EUR317 million (USD339 million), as revealed in the ministry's official statement.
Manufactured by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, David's Sling boasts the capability to intercept missiles and rockets within a range of 40km to 300KM. Described by the Israeli military as one of the world's most advanced systems for countering ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones, David's Sling has demonstrated its high-performance capabilities in various challenging scenarios, according to the Defense Ministry.
Finland's decision to acquire the system was initially announced in April, just a day after the country officially joined NATO. Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen highlighted the strategic significance of the acquisition, stating that David's Sling would significantly extend Finland's ground-based air defense capabilities and enable the interception of targets at high altitudes.
While David's Sling has been operational since 2017, its real-life usage has been limited. Notably, the system achieved its first interception in May 2023, successfully downing a rocket fired at Tel Aviv from Gaza. Subsequently, in the same month, it thwarted another similar projectile launched at Jerusalem.
The deal signifies a strengthening partnership between Israel and Finland, showcasing the international appeal of Israel's advanced defense technologies. As Finland becomes the first foreign buyer of David's Sling, the agreement holds implications for regional security and defense collaboration, highlighting Israel's position as a key player in the global defense industry.
