USM Holding’s founder wins legal battle against Austrian paper Kurier

(MENAFN) Founder of USM Holding and Russian-Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov won his legal battle against Austrian paper Kurier on Friday, according to court records reported by EU Today.

In accordance with the information, Kurier referred to Usmanov as "one of Putin's favorite oligarchs" in a paper from August of this year headlined "Oligarchs of Russia: Financing Putin's Wars and Profiting from Them."

“The native of Uzbekistan enjoys the reputation of being ‘Putin’s favorite oligarch,’ a title bestowed upon him by Putin himself,” the story stated.

The article's reference to the Russian leader's statement was not found in any public records, according to the court. The publication had made the case that Usmanov had been referred to in the same way when EU sanctions were put in place against him in 2022. The court determined that there wasn't enough justification to use the name in the piece, nevertheless.

The judgment effectively prohibited its usage in the media by finding that the expression was offensive and infringed upon Usmanov's rights.
