Security Forces Seized Over 270-Kg Drugs In N. Iraq

(MENAFN- Nam News Network) BAGHDAD, Aug 4 (NNN-NINA) – The Iraqi security forces have busted a drug trafficking group in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, arresting a major drug dealer and seizing more than 270 kg of drugs, the Supreme Judicial Council said, yesterday.

The operation was carried out in the Duhok province in coordination with an anti-narcotics force from the Kurdish regional capital, Erbil, the council said in a statement.

More than 236 kg of Captagon tablets and nearly 36 kg of opium were seized, it said, without revealing the number of suspects arrested.

Chaos and conflicts that swept the country since the U.S. invasion in 2003, have hindered successive Iraqi governments over the past decades from properly addressing the threat of drugs to Iraqi society.

However, Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani underlined in May, the importance of waging“a war on drugs,” calling it as important as combating terrorism.

Drug dealing is one of the main ways to fund terrorism, and the circulation of drugs thrives in the shadow of terrorism, al-Sudani said.– NNN-NINA
