Special Tribunal Could Punish Belarus Leadership For Participating In War Korynevych

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Anton Korynevych, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, does not rule out that in the future the Special Tribunal will be able to punish the leadership of Belarus for participating in the war against Ukraine.

As the diplomat told a briefing on Tuesday, July 18, judicial bodies are created to punish for certain crimes, not to punish a specific person. In our case, we are talking about the creation of a Special Tribunal on the crime of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

According to Korynevych, currently, it is not possible to say for sure that the Special Tribunal will hold the leadership of Belarus to account for helping Russia in the war against Ukraine. At the same time, the diplomat drew attention to the fact that the actions of the Belarusian leadership fall under the international definition of an act of aggression.

"We are currently unable to say who this judicial body [Special Tribunal] will be able to hold accountable for the crime of aggression. But providing the territory of a state to carry out an act of aggression against a third state is an act of aggression under international law. Therefore, obviously, there may be a reason for the Special Tribunal to work in this context in the future," the Ambassador said.

As reported, Ukraine, together with its partners, promotes the creation of a special tribunal to prosecute the leadership of the Russian Federation for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
