Top Republican Senator blocks US arms deal with Hungary
(MENAFN) Head Republican Senator James Risch is cancelling the contract of United States weapons with Hungary worth hundreds of millions of dollars on its unwillingness to approve Sweden’s application to become a NATO member, as stated by Washington Post on Wednesday.
In a declaration to the newspaper, Risch, who works as a senior member in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, claimed that until Hungary made development in this matter, he would keep on stalling regarding trading a USD735 million weapons bundle that contains 24 HIMARS batteries, in addition to the ammo as well as hardware that comes with them.
Risch also stated: “For some time now, I have directly expressed my concerns to the Hungarian government regarding its refusal to move forward a vote for Sweden to join NATO,” he also added that “The fact that it is now June and still not done, I decided that the sale of new US military equipment to Hungary will be on hold.”
Any main weapons contract of United States should be allowed by head members of the Senate and House foreign ties committees ahead of the permission of the State Department to conduct a public declaration.
