Safadi Urges Continuation Of US-Led Global Coalition To Defeat Daesh

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - Jordan will remain an effective partner in the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh, which represents a successful implementation of collective action to combat terrorism, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi said on Thursday.

During the coalition's Riyadh-hosted ministerial conference, inaugurated by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Safadi stressed the importance of the coalition's continuation, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Jordan's commitment to joint action to combat terrorism militarily and ideologically will continue through partnerships such as the coalition, and through the Aqaba process, which will convene in Córdoba, Spain, later this month to coordinate international anti-terrorism efforts in Africa, Safadi said.

Though“great victories” have been won over terrorism, ending the threat and preventing its resurgence requires sustaining the work of the US-led coalition, he added.

Defeating terrorism requires ending conflict and conditions of despair, oppression, deprivation and ignorance, which are exploited by Daesh and other terrorist organisations to spread injustice and destruction, Safadi said.

The foreign minister reiterated the need to intensify efforts to resolve regional crises, and called for support for the Arab path towards a political solution to the crisis in Syria that would end its humanitarian suffering and threats, including terrorism.

The minister also urged support for Iraq's stability after the country's historic victory over terrorism, which was won with "great" sacrifice. Amman will continue to support Baghdad in such endeavours, Safadi stressed.

Safadi also met with several counterparts participating in the event, and held talks with Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt over bilateral relations, the Palestinian issue and efforts to solve the crisis in Syria.
