(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The Pakistan government on Thursday placed the names of the former Prime minister, Imran Khan, his wife, Bushra Bibi and dozens of other PTI leaders who have still not quit the party on the“no-fly list” on the ground that they might flee abroad.
Officials said names of the deposed premier, his wife and several other PTI leaders had been added to the“no-fly list,” local media reported.
The no-fly list, also known as the ECL, was added repeatedly by succeeding administrations for years despite being a legal tool to restrict the movement of“dangerous” people and prevent them from travelling overseas.
Meanwhile, the government, apart from filing lawsuits, arresting and re-arresting the opponents, limiting their ability to travel overseas freely will put more pressure on them.
Though Imran has claimed he would not leave the country, the government has added his name, wife, and other party leaders to the no-fly list.
“Imran Khan is not going anywhere, so his name on ECL is useless,” Imran Khan said.
The development comes amid rumours that his political party may be banned in response to the attacks by his followers on military facilities. Imran Khan spoke to the Pakistani people on Wednesday and announced that his party is the target of a significant crackdown.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan claimed on Thursday that the government of Pakistan is trying to dismantle the party.
“Today, the largest and the only Federal party is facing the full fury of state power without accountability. Over 10,000 PTI workers and supporters in jail, including senior leadership and some facing custodial torture,” Khan tweeted.
Imran Khan previously stated that he is prepared to form a committee for negotiations with“anyone who is in power today” in one of his speeches. After Khan was taken into custody by the paramilitary Rangers on May 9, it triggered the violent protests.
Imran Khan is taking criticism for the extensive violence that PTI members committed earlier this month. The mob attacked several military facilities, including the Army headquarters in Rawalpindi. The police reported ten death from violent protests.
