Liverpool Fans Boo National Anthem During Premier League Match
(MENAFN) The Premier League match between Liverpool and Brentford on Saturday was marked by a loud chorus of boos from Liverpool fans during the national anthem. The fans drowned out ‘God Save the King’ with chants of “Liverpool,” demonstrating their disrespect for the monarchy. The occasion was particularly significant as it coincided with the coronation of King Charles III, which was being celebrated throughout the UK.
As both teams lined up at Liverpool’s home ground of Anfield, the first notes of the anthem were met with a loud chorus of boos from the Liverpool supporters. The stadium soon erupted into chants of “Liverpool,” completely drowning out the anthem.
This is not the first time that Liverpool fans have booed during the national anthem, as they have a long-standing habit of doing so. Pundits have attributed this behavior to the city’s left-wing political leanings, its large Irish population, and its residents’ general distaste for the establishment. In a previous incident, Liverpool supporters booed the anthem at London’s Wembley Stadium during the FA Cup final, which made national news.
Before the match, Liverpool FC released a statement acknowledging that they, along with every other club playing that day, had been asked by the Premier League to play the anthem before kick-off as a way to mark the “historic occasion” of King Charles III’s coronation. However, this did not deter the Liverpool fans from voicing their displeasure.
The incident has sparked much debate and controversy, with some criticizing the behavior of the Liverpool fans while others defending their right to express their opinions. Regardless, the incident has highlighted the ongoing tension between Liverpool and the monarchy, which shows no signs of abating anytime soon.
