Doha: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and its partners will participate in the observance of the World Hand Hygiene Day, which falls on the fifth of May of this year.

Within the framework of the celebration, the Ministry of Public Health will launch an awareness campaign in cooperation with Hamad Medical Corporation, the Primary Health Care Corporation, the health sector and all health care facilities in the State of Qatar under the slogan“Accelerate action together. Save Lives – Clean Your Hands“!

The campaign will focus on accelerating the pace of work to prevent infection and antimicrobial resistance in health care and build a culture of safety and quality in which improving hand hygiene is given high priority. The campaign aims to progress the goal of maintaining a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in health care and to 'bring people together' in support of hand hygiene improvement globally.

The campaign brings together all healthcare facilities in Qatar and health workers by committing to the five seconds taken in hand cleaning. It also brings together health practitioners who are responsible for infection prevention and control, those whose roles are leading the way towards clean hands, policymakers who invest for health and dignity, and people who receive care by joining the campaign.

The campaign aims to strengthen and empower healthcare communities to accelerate action to improve hand hygiene and infection prevention and control in care settings, to foster collaboration between people and organizations towards the common goal of minimizing the risk of infection and to develop strategies related to antimicrobial resistance in healthcare.

The campaign, which is implemented by the Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Department's National Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial resistance (IPC/AMR) Unit at Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), includes awareness activities on World Hand Hygiene Day, most notably distributing educational leaflets on the importance of hand hygiene, infection prevention and control, and producing guidance presentations in patients and visitors waiting areas, display screens in public areas and social media materials.

Awareness activities will be also carried out through field visits and virtually in different languages in health facilities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) data indicates that adhering to hand hygiene prevents up to 50% of acquired infections, including infections that have an impact on health care givers, and good hand hygiene practices are critical to improving the safety of patients, health workers and the community, as maintaining hand hygiene contributes to protecting the community from infections and diseases.
