Hydro-Quebec, the province's power utility, had its website and mobile app temporarily knocked out by a cyberattack.
A pro-Russian hacker group known as“NoName057” claimed responsibility for the Hydro-Quebec attack that brought down its website and app for several hours.
However, the utility said that its critical systems and Quebec's power grid were not impacted by the cyberattack. Hydro-Quebec added that its customers' personal data was not compromised.
Hydro-Quebec is not the only Canadian organization to be targeted by Russian hackers.
In the past week, multiple Canadian websites have been targeted by pro-Russian groups, including the Port of Quebec and Laurentian Bank (LB).
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's official website was also hit by a cyberattack. Trudeau blamed the attacks on Canada's continued support of Ukraine in its war against Russia.
The hacker group has also engaged in several cyberattacks in the U.S. in recent months.
The attack on Hydro-Quebec comes as the utility works to restore power to the entire province following a recent ice storm that left 1.1. million customers without electricity.
