(MENAFN) During a meeting between Iranian Transport and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash and a senior aide to the president of the Russian Federation, Igor Yevgenyevich Levitin, the two sides emphasized the need to enhance the transit of commodities through the Caspian Sea. Held at the Iranian Transport and Urban Development Ministry in Tehran, the meeting focused on the development of cooperation in air, sea, rail, and road sectors, including multimodal transportation.
The Iranian minister underlined the importance of transportation cooperation between the two countries, highlighting the long history of maritime trade between Iranian and Russian ports. He also suggested the use of the active ports of the two countries in the Caspian Sea for new cooperation.
Levitin summarized the expert meetings and the visit of the Russian delegation to the Rasht-Astara railway route, calling for the development of transportation cooperation in all areas. The two sides agreed on the necessity of expanding cooperation to promote trade and transit through various transportation modes.
It is worth noting that Iran and Russia signed an agreement last year to revive the idle section of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) in Iran, aiming to expand transit ties. In July 2020, the first Russian freight train arrived at Iran's Sarakhs railway station in Khorasan-Razavi province on the border with Turkmenistan to officially launch the eastern section of the INSTC. The event was attended by Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber and other high-ranking officials.
In October of the same year, the second Russian transit cargo for India entered Iran from the northeastern Sarakhs border. Iran and Russia are cooperating in the maritime sector to use the Caspian Sea as a means of shortening the transit route from Russia to India.
The emphasis on cooperation in boosting transit through the Caspian Sea underscores the significance of developing transportation ties between Iran and Russia. The expansion of transportation cooperation can facilitate trade and boost economic growth for both countries, as well as strengthen their regional influence.
