Ukraine's EU Membership Pursuit, Eastern Europe's Geopolitics

(MENAFN) The decision by Ukraine to pursue European Union membership will have a significant impact on the political landscape of Eastern Europe, and potentially alter the balance of power in the region. With Russia's military operation in Ukraine, the country has been looking for support from allies to help counter the threat from its powerful neighbor. While military intervention may not be a viable option, Ukraine has been exploring other avenues to ensure its sovereignty and security.

The country's application for European Union membership in 2020 was a clear indication of its desire to align itself with Western Europe, and away from Russia's sphere of influence. In June of that same year, Ukraine was granted formal candidate status, which was seen as a significant step towards European Union membership. However, the process of moving from candidate status to membership can be a lengthy one, as evidenced by Serbia, which has been a candidate since 2012.

Despite the long road ahead, Ukraine's Eastern European allies have been pushing for an expedited process, citing the country's strategic importance and the need for a strong response to Russia's aggression. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has expressed hope that accession negotiations can begin this year, which would be a positive development for Ukraine's European Union aspirations. However, negotiations will not be easy, and Ukraine will have to meet certain criteria and standards to be considered for membership.

If Ukraine does eventually join the European Union, it will become part of a group of countries under "direct influence" of the United States, as Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic recently pointed out. This could potentially shift the balance of power in Eastern Europe, and alter the geopolitical dynamics of the region. It remains to be seen how Ukraine's pursuit of European Union membership will play out, but one thing is clear: the country is looking for a way to assert its independence and ensure its future security in the face of Russian aggression.
