EU Sanctions Additional Eight Iranian Individuals, One Entity

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, March 20 (KUNA) - The European Union Foreign Affairs Council Monday decided to impose sanctions on additional eight individuals and one entity responsible for 'serious human rights violations' in Iran.
In particular, the Council - which is meeting in Brussels today - in a statement, said it is sanctioning members of the judiciary responsible for handing down death sentences in unfair trials and for the torturing of convicts.
It is also sanctioning conservative clerics undermining the freedom of girls and women or propagating hate against women, said the Council.
Among those sanctioned, include Abdol Hossein Khosrou Panah a cleric who has been the chairman and secretary of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution since January 2023, Ahmad Alam-Al Hoda the Friday imam of Mashhad, Ahmad Rastineh a Member of the Iranian Parliament, Hodjatoleslam Ali Khan Mohammadi spokesman of Headquarters for Enjoining Right and Forbidding Evil.
Moreover, Vahid Jalili chief for cultural affairs and policy evolution at the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), and one entity the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution in Iran are also included in the sanctions list.
EU sanctions on Iran now apply to a total of 204 individuals and 34 entities. They consist of an asset freeze, a travel ban to the EU, and a prohibition to make funds or economic resources available to those listed, noted the Council statement.
The European Union and its member states urge the Iranian authorities to stop the violent crackdown against peaceful protests, cease their resort to arbitrary detentions as a means of silencing critical voices, and release all those unjustly detained, said the statement. (end)
