Spain's LNG imports from Russia surge in February

(MENAFN) Spain has significantly increased its imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, with the amount of LNG purchased from Russia more than doubling in February 2023 compared to the same month last year. According to data from Enagas, a Spanish energy company, Spain imported 5.46 Terrawatt-hours (TWh) of LNG from Russia in February 2023, up from 2.17 TWh in February 2022, representing an increase of 151.4 percent.

Despite the significant increase in LNG imports from Russia, the United States remains the largest LNG exporter to Spain, accounting for about 22.8 percent of total imports in February. However, Enagas reported that the United States LNG supplies have decreased considerably from the 12.4 TWh delivered per month on average last year.

Last year, Enagas reported that Spain increased its LNG imports from Russia by 45 percent compared to 2021. Russia ranked as the fourth-largest supplier of LNG to Spain in 2022, after the United States, Algeria, and Nigeria, with the United States and Nigeria providing a respective 20.7 percent and 20.2 percent of Spain's LNG imports as of January 2023. It is worth noting that Spain's increasing reliance on Russian LNG has raised concerns about potential energy security issues and geopolitical risks.
